Reliability Centred Maintenance Case Studies

Red Arrows AAES maintenance developed with RCM

Hawk Aircraft Assisted Escape System (AAES) Maintenance Requirements

Aspîre was contracted by the UK MoD to review the maintenance requirements of the AAES for the Hawk aircraft and was one of a series of similar studies carried out by Aspîre on the Tornado, Tucano and Harrier aircraft.  The aim of this task was to reduce the level of maintenance, primarily at periodic bay maintenance visits and to review the overall number of times the ejection seat and safety equipment had to be removed from the aircraft for bay maintenance to be accomplished.  As a result of the study a recommendation was made which reduced the frequency of bay maintenance activities by approximately 30%.

This task has identified considerable man-hour cost savings for the Hawk fleet.  Extension of some of the scheduled maintenance activities releases aircraft for operations, and also reduces aircraft maintenance down time.

Aspire developed Royal Navy RCM structural analysis methodology

royal Navy Landing Platform Dock (LPD) RCm Structural Analysis Methodology

Aspîre was involved in the development of the UK Royal Navy (RN) methodology for conducting structural analysis on Ships to determine structural inspections and co-authored the structural element of the RN Defence Standard and carried out the Type 23 and Landing Platform Dock (LPD) RCM structural analysis studies.

The study created a maintenance hull survey plan which ensures safety by concentrating on Structurally Significant Items (SSI) , both internal and external.  A compartment analysis directs the Ship Staff to address the “other structure”, not designated an SSI, on a more formal basis than was previously adopted.

A RCM-based solution was used to update the maintenance schedules for the Sea Fury aircraft

Historic Aircraft - Modern RCM Maintenance Schedule

Aspîre has delivered new maintenance schedules for the Sea Fury aircraft of the Royal Navy Historic Flight (RNHF). The Sea Fury was the Fleet Air Arm's last piston-engined fighter to serve in front-line Squadrons.

A RCM based solution was used to determine the maintenance requirements for this aircraft. The new maintenance schedule will significantly contribute to the safe and efficient operation of this display aircraft.
